What Is the Ego?

^{The worship of One’s self – with a little ‘s’ – instead of God.}

¹ The ego is idolatry—the sign of limited and separated self, born in a body, doomed to suffer and to end its life in death. This is the way You set it up to be.  A decision which has been most unrewarding. A choice at which You should have laughed. Instead You took it seriously,  as if it were valid. It is the will that sees the Will of God as enemy and takes a form in which It is denied. It sees Itself as god, yet knows it’s not; still, it would pretend The ego is the “proof” that strength is weak and love is fearful, life is really death, and what opposes God alone is true. And all this so-called ‘proof’ refers but to itself, quite non-existent, projected out upon God’s Son.

 

² The ego is insane. In fear it stands beyond the Everywhere, apart from All, in separation from the Infinite. Fear and loneliness is all You can get from ego. In its insanity it thinks it has become a victor over God Himself, and in its terrible autonomy, it “sees” the Will of God has been destroyed. It thinks that it is real, and points to the dreaming world as validation for it. Separation is its ‘proof’ that it has been successful, for it takes the dream to be ‘reality’. Now You understand why it has seemed so hard to Awaken. Your belief in dreams is crucial. It dreams of punishment and trembles at the figures in its dreams, its enemies who seek to murder it before it can ensure its safety by attacking them. Dreams must be real, else the whole phantasmagoria will crumble. You must be quite sure that the dream is real. It has to be perfectly convincing.

 

³ The Son of God is egoless. What made Him choose dreams and keep on choosing? What but addiction. What can he know of madness and the death of God when he abides in Him? He must stay drunk on dreams, or else He’ll Awaken. Therefore, they must be convincing and compelling and frightening as well. What can he know of sorrow and of suffering when he lives in eternal joy? More ‘real’ to Him than happiness. This takes determination! What can he know of fear and punishment, of sin and guilt, of hatred and attack when all there is surrounding him is everlasting peace, forever conflict-free and undisturbed in deepest silence and tranquillity? This peace, accepted, would quickly put an end to all dreamings.

 

⁴ To know Reality is not to see the ego and its thoughts, its works, its acts, its laws and its beliefs, its dreams, its hopes, its plans for its salvation, and the cost belief in it entails. You must let go of all investment in any kind of dreams, and ask, instead, to see the Son of God, right there where You are. And You will see Him  In suffering, which is the firm foundation of the dream,  the price for faith in it is so immense that crucifixion of the Son of God is offered daily at its darkened shrine and blood must flow before the altar where its sickly followers prepare for death. Without the belief that suffering is real, the Son would have to give up dying1 You can see how deep runs the investment. The dream rests on suffering and the ability to ‘die’.

 

⁵ Yet will one lily of forgiveness change the darkness into light, – the Love that stands behind forgiveness illuminates the gloominess of dreaming. the altar to illusions to the shrine of Life Itself. False gods gone, God is in His Place again, and We there with Him. And peace will be restored forever to the holy minds which God created as His Son, His dwelling-place, His joy, His love, completely His, completely one with Him. All We need do: Love God enough to let go of the ego. It’s always simple.
