LESSON ONE HUNDRED-NINETY-NINE

L e s s o n  199

I am not a body. I am free.  Okay, then if You say I’m not a body, what can I be, and why does the body seem to be Me?

You are but Mind, Consciousness that is unlimited, including Infinity and Eternity.

¹ Freedom must be impossible as long as you perceive a body as yourself. The body is a limit. Who would seek for freedom in a body looks for it where it can not be found. – Only Consciousness is free of limits.  And You are mind; You are not a body. – The mind can be made free when it no longer sees itself as in a body, firmly tied to it and sheltered by its presence.  The word “in” is obsolete and meaningless, for all things do extend from their Source.  Your mind has never been in Your body, for the idea of body pours forth from mind.  Again: Your mind is no way tied to or in body. – If this were the truth, the mind were vulnerable indeed!  Mind – God – Be-ing all things – is invulnerable.  And the Mind is Your only mind.

² The mind that serves the Holy Spirit is unlimited forever, in all ways, beyond the laws of time and space, unbound by any preconceptions, and with strength and power to do whatever it is asked. – The mind of which We speak is Your mind as well as Mine, and It is the Holy Spirit.  It is where We all are united. – Attack thoughts cannot enter such a mind because it has been given to the Source of Love. And fear can never enter in a mind that has attached itself to Love. It rests in God, and who can be afraid who lives in Innocence and only loves?  Would You not will to Be this Mind?  You won’t miss one bit of thinking You’re a body.  Mind is much more fun, for It can Be everywhere at once, or it can choose one location.  That is just where You got stuck, in the separation.  That mindset did block out Universal.   You’re still here, stuck in specificity.  Now that You know that You’re but Love, freedom is available.

³ It is essential for your progress in this course that you accept today’s idea and hold it very dear. – Remind Yourself quite frequently that You are not a body! – Be not concerned that to the ego it is quite insane. For the ego itself is so insane!

The ego holds the body dear because it dwells in it and lives united with the home that it has made. – The body as You experience it, is the ego’s pride and joy creation. – It is a part of the illusion that has sheltered it from being found illusory itself.  The ego is the arch-magician, expert in countless astounding illusions.  The body is its coup de grace; second only to ‘matter’; it’s by far its favorite invention.

⁴ Here does it hide, and here it can be seen as what it is. Declare your innocence, and you are free. – I am not a body, and I have never been one!  Ir has all been but a dream! – The body disappears because you have no need of it except the need the Holy Spirit sees. For this, the body will appear as useful form for what the mind must do. It thus becomes a vehicle which helps forgiveness be extended to the all-inclusive goal that it must reach according to God’s plan.  Right now the body makes You visible and audible to all Your Brothers that They may see and hear Your awakening.

⁵ Cherish today’s idea, and practice it today and every day. – Become curious about Your freedom. – Make it a part of every practice period you take. Cherish Your Reality.  You’re really going to Love Your Real Self, and ditto loving All Your Others.

There is no thought that will not gain thereby in power to help the world, and none which will not gain in added gifts to you as well. – Just think of all the freedom that You have, unlimited by a matter body. You can be everywhere at once, as I am with All of You. – We sound the call of freedom round the world with this idea. – No longer are You earthbound.  The Universe is Yours, just as it is also Mine! – And would you be exempt from the acceptance of the gifts you give?  You must already have them to give them!

⁶ The Holy Spirit is the home of minds that seek for freedom.  Holy Spirit is Divine Consciousness.

In Him they find what they have sought. – As Holy Spirit do You find Your Self. – The body’s purpose now is unambiguous. – It serves to identify You to those who still are dreaming. Thus it serves a very useful purpose. – And it becomes perfect in the ability to serve an undivided goal. In conflict-free and unequivocal response to mind with but the thought of freedom as its goal, the body serves, and serves its purpose well. Without the power to enslave, it is a worthy servant of the freedom which the mind within the Holy Spirit seeks.  Sisters, Brothers, when You Awaken, how will You Love its identification!

⁷ Be free today, – in Your state of mind; free of ego goals – and carry freedom as your gift to those who still believe they are enslaved within a body. – For with the separation, the body went from the expression of uniqueness to become both Your jail and Your jailer. – Be you free, so that the Holy Spirit can make use of your escape from bondage to set free the many who perceive themselves as bound and helpless and afraid. – Your joy, Your happiness, will be a Light to those who are still enslaved in dreaming. – Let love replace their fears through you.  – For They’ll feel the Love behind Your joy and wiil be happy too. – Accept salvation now, and give your mind to Him Who calls to you to make this gift to Him. For He would give you perfect freedom, perfect joy, and hope that finds its full accomplishment in God.  The ego has been a cruel slave-master.  Not so God Who’s always very good and so very gentle.  Indeed is He Love.  You can rest easy; there’s no God of wrath.  That’s an ego invention to keep You locked up in the dream.  God has only Good for His Belovèd.  His Belovèd is but each One of You.

⁸ You are God’s Son. – So very, very loved and so cherished. – In immortality you live forever.  The ego scoffs and sneers at this.  Tell it to shut up, and then ignore it!

Would you not return your mind to this? – Notice that I am saying mind, and not to return Your body or Your brain.  Get in the habit now of thinking of Yourself as consciousness and not of body. – Then practice well the thought the Holy Spirit gives you for today. – It is just wonderful to be released from all the limits that Your belief of body have laid upon You.  “Body” is the symbol of separation, while Consciousness but stands as and for Unity. – Your brothers stand released with you in it; the world is blessed along with you; God’s Son will weep no more, and Heaven offers thanks for the increase of joy your practice brings even to it.  – You know Your happiness is contagious! – And God Himself extends His Love and happiness each time you say:

⁹ I am not a body. I am free.
I hear the Voice that God has given me,
And it is only this my mind obeys.

And I am still as God creates Me.

INTRODUCTION to Lessons 181 – 200

^I181:1 Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong, your scattered goals blend into one intent. – All commitment does start with this one thing: just the little willingness to do it, whatever it takes.  So even if You do slip and fall, You get right up again. – You are not asked for total dedication all the time, as yet. But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. It is experiencing this which makes it sure that you will give your total willingness to following the way the course sets forth.  How did He segue from the little willingness to total?!  (He is laughing hard!)  Only the ego would ask that question!  By now, don’t You think that You should know Me!  Give Me an inch of good, and I’ll give You back a mile of it.  Give Me a drop of Love, and I’ll return to You an ocean.

With what are We dealing but the Divine Qualities of God.  Life, Truth and Love.  Spirit, Soul and Mind.  Holy Divine Principle, Its Joy and Peace.  How precious are the attributes of God.  They are Your treasure.  And where Your treasure is, there is Your Love.

² Our lessons now are geared specifically to widening horizons – by loosening the ego’s stranglehold that it has on You – and direct approaches to the special blocks which keep your vision narrow and too limited to let you see the value of our goal.  What has it been that has severely narrowed Your horizons?

Well, what else but sir and lady ego?

We are attempting now to lift these blocks, however briefly. Words alone can not convey the sense of liberation which their lifting brings. – Yes, that day that Helen had, recounted in “Absence From Felicity”₁ is a perfect example.  Every day – and every moment can and will be like that! – But the experience of freedom and of peace that comes as you give up your tight control of what you see speaks for itself. Your motivation will be so intensified that words become of little consequence. You will be sure of what you want and what is valueless.  The ego will attempt to deter Your progress, tell You that You can’t sustain such an experience.  And yet the ego is always lying.  Do not believe it.  Tell it to shut up, and really mean it!

³ And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes our progress still. Experience of what exists beyond defensiveness remains beyond achievement while it is denied. It may be there, but you cannot accept its presence.  For You are quite defended against It.  And what does live in the Silence but experience of perfect Love and safety. So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. No more than this is asked because no more than this is needed. It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.  One Holy Moment is but a promise of All which await Your invitation!
