LESSON ONE HUNDRED-NINETY-THREE

L e s s o n  193

All things are lessons God would have me learn.  There must be a gift, and even freedom and salvation, available in every instant, despite the human picture.  And ‘human’ and ‘ego are synonymous in the nightmare of separation.  For it is only a term for a quite narrowed point of view.

One that the ego is quite attached to. … Remember that You are not the ego.

¹ God does not know of learning. – For the Son of God already knows all things the Father-Mother knows.  To remind is not the same as teaching.  See the word “re-mind”.  That is what this Course is doing: bringing You back from ‘living’ as body, when You are really Mind.

Yet His Will extends to what He does not understand in that He wills the happiness His Son inherited of Him be undisturbed, eternal and forever gaining scope, eternally expanding in the joy of full creation, and eternally open and wholly limitless in Him. – Our God, Our Source, that We call Father-Mother, knows only perfect happiness and peace, with no knowing of the misery the slleping Son of God endures.  Can Truth know a lie?  Despite the Son’s somnolent state, God does extend to Her, to Him, good that’s both continual and eternal. – This is His Will. And thus His Will provides the means to guarantee that it is done.  Despite His willful dreams, the Son has not for an instant been abandoned. God’s Love for Him forever continues.

² God sees no contradictions. – God’s Vision is of pure perfection and of absolute harmony; in other words: Reality. He does not see the Son’s peculiar imaginations. – Yet His Son believes he sees them. It never dawns on Him that He is dreaming, that He’s insane.  I know My words sound harsh, yet is it sane to prefer a nightmare to a wonderful Reality that is purely Love?   You know it isn’t

Thus he – and that He is You – has a need for One Who can correct his erring sight and give him vision that will lead him back to where perception ceases. – Perception is how You think a thing is, opposed to Knowing. Perception is a part of dreaming. – God does not perceive at all. – He simply Knows, and His Knowing is the endless Universe. – Yet it is He Who gives the means by which perception is made true and beautiful enough to let the light of Heaven shine upon it. – As the sleeping Son reaches out from the dream to connect with Me, with God, or with the Holy Spirit, His way of seeing things – i.e. perception – starts to improve as His thoughts reach out for Truth and Beauty. He feels nearer God. – It is He Who answers what His Son would contradict and keeps his sinlessness forever safe.  And in the reacing out blindly for safety, He finds himself embraced and completely loved.  His mind starts changing.  He’s beginning to remember.  Heaven starts to joy at His recalling.  And the Son is Who?  No other than You.

³God offers no forgiveness, for He knows no sin is possible. – You are forever perfect in His eyes. – And yet He let His holy law of Love be given form in which it could be offered to the world. And He created One Who could perceive what form this law should take, to be received by every mind which had forgotten it as it exists in Heaven and in God. The speaking here is of Myself, yet is a possibility for Every One of You, here and now.  It is interesting that My Function of Loving is what All do notice about Me; and yet My strongest demonstrations were related to Life: the Resurrection, raising of the ‘dead’, and every one of the healings.

Thus He encompassed what He could not see nor understand by giving of His Love and making Answer to a question which, though meaningless, His Son had asked of Him.  Help?  Help? Screams the sleeping Son of God a myriad of times throughout the day, although He knows it not, for He sees His cry for help as any one of many emotions.  Thus came One Awake to rouse Him from His agony.

⁴ The One Whom God created to replace the foolish thoughts which crept into the mind of His most holy Son with peace and joy fulfills His function now. He redirects each lesson you would teach in hate to one in which forgiveness enters, and returns the hate to love, so that the fear is gone.  Do You see why I harp on forgiveness?  Could You see Your Brother as an enemy and still be free?

Look at what forgiveness can do for You: And now guilt cannot enter, for its source has been excluded as the purpose of the lesson has been changed to guiltlessness; the hatred has been rooted out by love.  A holy miracle it is for You to gain Your freedom!  For hatred is such a heavy burden, weighing You down, and this does often show up as overweight.

⁵ These are the lessons God would have you learn. His Will reflects them all, and they reflect His loving kindness to the Son He loves. Each lesson has a central thought, the same in all of them. The form alone is changed, with different circumstances and events, with different characters and different themes apparent but not real. They are the same in fundamental content. It is this:

⁶ Forgive and you will see this differently.

Let it but go and You’ll see Your Love flow.

⁷ Certain it is that all distress does not appear to be but unforgiveness. – Yet it surely is.  If it were not so, I would have told You. Yet that is the content underneath the form.  There is but one ego, expressed by countless enslaved minds, just as there is One God expressed infinitely as Son of God.

It is this sameness which makes learning sure because the lesson is so simple that it cannot be rejected in the end.  Either You Love Your Brother or You don’t Love.

No one can hide forever from a truth so very obvious that it appears in countless forms and yet is recognized as easily in all of them if one but wants to see the simple lesson there.

⁸ Forgive and you will see this differently.

⁹ These are the words the Holy Spirit speaks in all your tribulations, all your pain, all suffering regardless of its forms. These are the words with which temptation ends and guilt, abandoned, is revered no more. These are the words which end the dream of sin and rid the mind of fear. These are the words by which salvation comes to all the world.  Let’s say this even more simply: If You have aught against Your Brother – ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ the answer is just the same – let it go.  It never really happened because You’re living in a dream that You are hanging on to for dear ‘life’; life of the ego.  Let that go as well.

¹⁰ Shall we not learn to say these words when we are tempted to believe that pain is real and death becomes our choice instead of life? Shall we not learn to say these words when we have understood their power to release all minds from bondage? These are words which give you power over all events which seem to have been given power over you. You see them rightly when you hold these words in full awareness, and do not forget these words apply to everything you see or any brother looks upon amiss.  How to forgive?  How to let it go?  Good questions.  Remind Yourself that this is but a dream made up by the pesky ego.  Swat it away, as You would swat a fly.  Remind Yourself that You have been deluded by Your own self.  Therefore, You can stop!  It takes self-discipline, and it’s worth it!

¹¹ How can you tell when you are seeing wrong or someone else is failing to perceive the lesson he should learn? Does pain seem real in the perception? If it does, be sure the lesson is not learned. And there remains an unforgiveness hiding in the mind which sees the pain through eyes the mind directs.  In other words: if You are angry, then You’ve forgotten to forgive Your Brother; Once again are You immersed in the dream.  Slap upside of Your head and yell wake up! (Yell to Yourself, and not to Your Brother!)

¹² God would not have you suffer thus. He would help you forgive yourself. His Son does not remember who he is. And God would have him not forget His Love and all the gifts His Love brings with it. Would you now renounce your own salvation?  This is a time to make a different choice.  Time to choose again.

Would you fail to learn the simple lessons Heaven’s Teacher sets before you that all pain may disappear and God may be remembered by His Son?  Would You let stubborn self-righteousness rob You of Your Real Self.  Would You stay an foolish puppet of the ego forever?

¹³ All things are lessons God would have you learn. He would not leave an unforgiving thought without correction nor one thorn or nail to hurt His sacred Son in any way. Will You stop treasuring all grievances! Save Your silver box for forgivenesses!

God would free You from all thought of self-righteousness, transforming it through forgiveness, until it is Love.

He would ensure his holy rest remain untroubled and serene, without a care in an eternal home – of such joyous Life, each moment precious! – which cares for him. And He would have all tears be wiped away with none remaining yet unshed and none but waiting their appointed time to fall. For God has willed that laughter should replace each one and that His Son be free again.  I am with All of You as You accept God’s great Gifts of Love.

¹⁴ We will attempt today to overcome a thousand seeming obstacles to peace in just one day. Let mercy come to you more quickly. Do not try to hold it off another day, another minute, or another instant. Time was made for this. Use it today for what its purpose is. Morning and night, devote what time you can to serve its proper aim, and do not let the time be less than meets your deepest need.  Won’t You give Me that little willingness, and in return the Father has an Eternity of great happiness for You.  Won’t You accept these loving Gifts for You?

¹⁵ Give all you can and give a little more, for now we would arise in haste and go unto our Father’s house. We have been gone too long, and we would linger here no more. And as we practice, let us think about all things we saved to settle by ourselves and kept apart from healing. Let us give them all to Him Who knows the way to look upon them so that they will disappear. Truth is His message; truth His teaching is. His are the lessons God would have us learn.  It’s time for Us to All hold hands and to run Home together!  Why suffer one more instant when You are so Loved and longed for.

¹⁶ Each hour spend a little time today, and in the days to come, in practicing the lesson in forgiveness in the form established for the day. And try to give it application to the happenings the hour brought, so that the next one is free of the one before. The chains of time are easily unloosened in this way.  Short and sweet: Let it go; let Your Love flow!

¹⁷ Let no one hour cast its shadow on the one that follows, and when that one goes, let everything that happens in its course go with it. Thus will you remain unbound, in peace eternal in the world of time. This is the lesson God would have you learn: there is a way to look on everything that lets it be to you another step to Him and to salvation of the world.  Be here NOW, for Your Function is to Love.  I’ll help You do it!

¹⁸ To all that speaks of terror, answer thus:

¹⁹ I will forgive and this will disappear.  Don’t You believe this?  You have not tried it.

²⁰ To every apprehension, every care, and every form of suffering, repeat these selfsame words. And then you hold the key that opens Heaven’s gate and brings the Love of God the Father down to earth at last, to raise it up to Heaven. God will take this final step Himself. Do not deny the little steps He asks you take to Him.  Each little step does bring You closer to a living Heaven.

INTRODUCTION to Lessons 181 – 200

^I181:1 Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong, your scattered goals blend into one intent. – All commitment does start with this one thing: just the little willingness to do it, whatever it takes.  So even if You do slip and fall, You get right up again. – You are not asked for total dedication all the time, as yet. But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. It is experiencing this which makes it sure that you will give your total willingness to following the way the course sets forth.  How did He segue from the little willingness to total?!  (He is laughing hard!)  Only the ego would ask that question!  By now, don’t You think that You should know Me!  Give Me an inch of good, and I’ll give You back a mile of it.  Give Me a drop of Love, and I’ll return to You an ocean.

With what are We dealing but the Divine Qualities of God.  Life, Truth and Love.  Spirit, Soul and Mind.  Holy Divine Principle, Its Joy and Peace.  How precious are the attributes of God.  They are Your treasure.  And where Your treasure is, there is Your Love.

² Our lessons now are geared specifically to widening horizons – by loosening the ego’s stranglehold that it has on You – and direct approaches to the special blocks which keep your vision narrow and too limited to let you see the value of our goal.  What has it been that has severely narrowed Your horizons?

Well, what else but sir and lady ego?

We are attempting now to lift these blocks, however briefly. Words alone can not convey the sense of liberation which their lifting brings. – Yes, that day that Helen had, recounted in “Absence From Felicity”₁ is a perfect example.  Every day – and every moment can and will be like that! – But the experience of freedom and of peace that comes as you give up your tight control of what you see speaks for itself. Your motivation will be so intensified that words become of little consequence. You will be sure of what you want and what is valueless.  The ego will attempt to deter Your progress, tell You that You can’t sustain such an experience.  And yet the ego is always lying.  Do not believe it.  Tell it to shut up, and really mean it!

³ And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes our progress still. Experience of what exists beyond defensiveness remains beyond achievement while it is denied. It may be there, but you cannot accept its presence.  For You are quite defended against It.  And what does live in the Silence but experience of perfect Love and safety. So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. No more than this is asked because no more than this is needed. It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.  One Holy Moment is but a promise of All which await Your invitation!
