LESSON ONE HUNDRED-EIGHTY-SIX

L e s s o n  186

Salvation of the world depends on me.  So if it does depend on Me, am I the One who’s stopping it by My egregious lack of giving Love to All?  This is the question to ask Yourself and answer very truthfully.  Would I give up My ‘righteous’ grievance to bless all My Brothers?

¹ Here is the statement that will one day take all arrogance away from every mind. Yes, indeed, it does.  For how arrogant can One remain when aware of their small-mindedness, of their unwillingness to extend Love called for?

Here is the thought of true humility which holds no function as your own but that which has been given you. It offers your acceptance of a part assigned to you, without insisting on another role. It does not judge your proper role. No glory here with this job, now is there!  Just the opposite.  Kind of like cleaning up after the horses have driven by.₁

It but acknowledges the Will of God is done on earth as well as Heaven. – It has the power to transform earth right back into Heaven. – It unites all wills on earth in Heaven’s plan to save the world, restoring it to Heaven’s peace.

² Let us not fight our function. – Who would fight the privilege of Be-ing Love?  Why it’s only the ego, not You!  It is but the ego which would rather be right than happy. – We did not establish it. It is not our idea. The means are given us by which it will be perfectly accomplished. All that we are asked to do is to accept our part in genuine humility and not deny with self-deceiving arrogance that we are worthy. What is given us to do we have the strength to do. Our minds are suited perfectly to take the part assigned to us by One Who knows us well.  What better use to put One’s mind than Love!

³ Today’s idea may seem quite sobering until you see its meaning. All it says is that your Father still remembers you and offers you the perfect trust He holds in you who are His Son. It does not ask that you be different in any way from what you are. – How could You really be.  It would have to be a delusion! – What could humility request but this? And what could arrogance deny but this? Today we will not shrink from our assignment on the specious grounds that modesty is outraged. It is pride that would deny the call of God Himself.  Tricky is ego, using anything to avoid loving.

⁴ All false humility we lay aside today that we may listen to God’s Voice reveal to us what He would have us do. We do not doubt our adequacy for the function He will offer us. We will be certain only that He knows our strengths, our wisdom, and our holiness. And if He deems us worthy, so we are. It is but arrogance that judges otherwise.  Arrogance parading as false humility, so sneaky.  Not nice, the ego.

⁵ There is one way and only one to be released from the imprisonment your plan to prove the false is true has brought to you. Accept the plan you did not make instead. Let go of control.  What does it get You?  Absolutely zilch!  The entire dream is all about control instead of trust.

Judge not your value to it. If God’s Voice assures you that salvation needs your part and that the whole depends on you, be sure that it is so. – We’re all in this together, not so the ego for its game is separation. – The arrogant must cling to words, afraid to go beyond them to experience which might affront their stance. Yet are the humble free to hear the Voice which tells them what they are and what to do.  It’s so relaxing not to be in charge!

⁶ Arrogance makes an image of yourself that is not real. – This is the figure that moves through endless dreams.  S/He has no substance, although S/He seems to You to be so solid and so real.  For You associate solidity with Reality although it is just the opposite.  And what You think to be ephemeral and lacking Substance is Real. – It is this image which quails and retreats in terror as the Voice for God assures you that you have the strength, the wisdom, and the holiness to go beyond all images. You are not weak, as is the image of yourself. You are not ignorant and helpless. Sin can not tarnish the truth in you, and misery can come not near the holy home of God.  An image is not real, but a mistaken picture of Reality.  You are not the image and likeness of God.  You are His living and eternal Presence.

⁷ All this the Voice for God relates to you. And as He speaks, the image trembles and seeks to attack the threat it does not know, sensing its basis crumble. Let it go. It’s not been anything but misery and suffering, and it isn’t even real!  You suffer from a misperception!

Salvation of the world depends on you and not upon this little pile of dust. What can it tell the holy Son of God? – (Remember, that’s You!  Belovèd Son of God, most Holy One.) – Why need he be concerned with it at all?  You are not what You’ve thought You are for eons.  Wake up My dearest sleeping Brother!

⁸ And so we find our peace. – It’s always been here, right where We think We – the human – is. – We will accept the function God has given us, – stability, reliability – for all illusions rest upon the weird belief that we can make another for ourselves. Our self-made roles are shifting, and they seem to change from mourner to ecstatic bliss of loved and loving. We can laugh or weep and greet the day with welcome or with tears. Our very being seems to change as we experience a thousand shifts in mood, and our emotions raise us high indeed or dash us to the ground in hopelessness.  What a travesty the ego makes of Life.  Why let it be Your experience?

⁹ Is this the Son of God?  – Could Perfection create imperfection?  And yet the world believes it to be so. – Could He create such instability and call it Son? He Who is changeless shares His attributes with His creation. – So much for birth, for sin, disease, and death!  They all are creations of the ego.  Or, more accurately, miscreations. – All the images His Son appears to make have no effect on what he is. They blow across his mind like windswept leaves that form a patterning an instant, break apart to group again, and scamper off. Or like mirages seen above a desert, rising from the dust.  The dreaming of the ego is substanceless.  It has no Divine Authority.  Impossible.  The Son is not Creator but Creation.  Not Revealer, but the Revelation.

¹⁰ These unsubstantial images will go and leave your mind unclouded and serene when you accept the function given you.  Because they’re not real, they can leave no mark.

The images you make give rise to but conflicting goals, impermanent and vague, uncertain and ambiguous. Who could be constant in his efforts or direct his energies and concentrated drive toward goals like these? The functions which the world esteems are so uncertain that they change ten times an hour at their most secure. What hope of gain can rest on goals like this?  The dream is pure insanity; not one thing is redeeming.

¹¹ In lovely contrast, certain as the sun’s return each morning to dispel the night, your truly given function stands out clear and wholly unambiguous. There is no doubt of its validity. It comes from One Who knows no error. And His Voice is certain of its messages. They will not change nor be in conflict. All of them point to one goal, and one you can attain. Your plan may be impossible, but God’s can never fail because He is its Source.  This is clear, without elucidation.  Reread it several times; let it sink in.

¹² Do as His Voice directs. And if it asks a thing of you that seems impossible, remember Who it is that asks and who would make denial. You have spent far too long listening to the ego.  Trust Christ, and then follow Me.

Then consider this-which is more likely to be right? The Voice that speaks for the Creator of all things Who knows all things exactly as they are, or a distorted image of yourself, confused, bewildered, inconsistent and unsure of everything? Let not its voice direct you. Hear instead a certain Voice Which tells you of a function given you by your Creator, Who remembers you and urges that you now remember Him.  Yes, this is True: God does remember You belovèd Son.

¹³ His gentle Voice is calling from the known to the unknowing. He would comfort you, although He knows no sorrow. He would make a restitution, though He is complete; a gift to you, although He knows that you have everything already.  His Love meets You right where You are, for He is Omnipresent.  He has Thoughts which answer every need His Son perceives, although He sees them not. For Love must give, and what is given in His Name takes on the form most useful in a world of form.  Love meeting You right where You are is quite recognizable.

¹⁴ These are the forms which never can deceive, although they come from Formlessness Itself. Forgiveness is an earthly form of love which as it is in Heaven has no form. Yet what is needed here is given here as it is needed. – You are very loved. – In this form, you can fulfil your function even here, although what love will mean to you when formlessness has been restored to you is greater still. Salvation of the world depends on you who can forgive. Such is your function here.  In other words, I am asking You to Love unconditionally as well as universally.

¹ When transportation was horse and carriage, Someone had to clean up the manure to keep the streets clean.  It was not a coveted job.  And it was necessary.

INTRODUCTION to Lessons 181 – 200

^I181:1 Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong, your scattered goals blend into one intent. – All commitment does start with this one thing: just the little willingness to do it, whatever it takes.  So even if You do slip and fall, You get right up again. – You are not asked for total dedication all the time, as yet. But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. It is experiencing this which makes it sure that you will give your total willingness to following the way the course sets forth.  How did He segue from the little willingness to total?!  (He is laughing hard!)  Only the ego would ask that question!  By now, don’t You think that You should know Me!  Give Me an inch of good, and I’ll give You back a mile of it.  Give Me a drop of Love, and I’ll return to You an ocean.

With what are We dealing but the Divine Qualities of God.  Life, Truth and Love.  Spirit, Soul and Mind.  Holy Divine Principle, Its Joy and Peace.  How precious are the attributes of God.  They are Your treasure.  And where Your treasure is, there is Your Love.

² Our lessons now are geared specifically to widening horizons – by loosening the ego’s stranglehold that it has on You – and direct approaches to the special blocks which keep your vision narrow and too limited to let you see the value of our goal.  What has it been that has severely narrowed Your horizons?

Well, what else but sir and lady ego?

We are attempting now to lift these blocks, however briefly. Words alone can not convey the sense of liberation which their lifting brings. – Yes, that day that Helen had, recounted in “Absence From Felicity”₁ is a perfect example.  Every day – and every moment can and will be like that! – But the experience of freedom and of peace that comes as you give up your tight control of what you see speaks for itself. Your motivation will be so intensified that words become of little consequence. You will be sure of what you want and what is valueless.  The ego will attempt to deter Your progress, tell You that You can’t sustain such an experience.  And yet the ego is always lying.  Do not believe it.  Tell it to shut up, and really mean it!

³ And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes our progress still. Experience of what exists beyond defensiveness remains beyond achievement while it is denied. It may be there, but you cannot accept its presence.  For You are quite defended against It.  And what does live in the Silence but experience of perfect Love and safety. So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. No more than this is asked because no more than this is needed. It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.  One Holy Moment is but a promise of All which await Your invitation!
