LESSON ONE HUNDRED-EIGHTY-TWO

L e s s o n  182

I will be still a moment and go home.  The moment that My mind does become quiet, I find no distance between Myself and peace; and where does peace abide but Home.

¹ This world you seem to live in is not home to you. And somewhere in your mind you know that this is true.  – Have You not often felt like a stranger in an even stranger land?  For You are stranger to Yourself. – A memory of home keeps haunting you, as if there were a place that called you to return, although you do not recognize the Voice nor what it is the Voice reminds you of. Yet still you feel an alien here, from somewhere all unknown. Nothing so definite that you could say with certainty you are an exile here. Just a persistent feeling, sometimes not more than a tiny throb, at other times hardly remembered, actively dismissed, but surely to return to mind again.  These words are My Gift of safety to You.  The world that You inhabit is but a nightmare from which You can now Awaken!

² No one but knows whereof we speak. Yet some try to put by their suffering in games they play to occupy their time and keep their sadness from them. Others will deny that they are sad and do not recognize their tears at all. Still others will maintain that what we speak of is illusion, not to be considered more than but a dream. Yet who in simple honesty, without defensiveness and self-deception, would deny he understands the words we speak?  The joy You feel from the time We spend together is most assuredly quite real!  The entire point of all My words is for You to make the connection!  My words above are for You dear Brothers and Sisters who have yet to make the connection.  We miss You.

³ We speak today for everyone who walks this world, for he is not at home. He goes uncertainly about in endless search, seeking in darkness what he cannot find, not recognizing what it is he seeks. A thousand homes he makes, yet none contents his restless mind. He does not understand he builds in vain. The home he seeks can not be made by him. There is no substitute for Heaven. All he ever made was hell.  You now understand Your lack of dissatisfaction with Your life – in other words Your outrageous joy – comes wholly from Our connection and is but a natural consequence of Our relationship.  I share this with You here in the Guidance that All Brothers can know what joy does await them!₁

⁴ Perhaps you think it is your childhood home that you would find again. – Dreamers romanticize their childhoods as a time of innocence, yet how innocent is the attack on God that brings most of You to the dream? – The childhood of your body – Yes!  You are starting to understand!  This whole dream is about thinking that You are but a body that is self-contained, complete within itself.  And yet, it is as pointless as the single pinky of which We spoke.  On its own, of what use is it? – and its place of shelter are a memory now so distorted that you merely hold a picture of a past that never happened. Yet there is a Child in you Who seeks His Father’s house and knows that He is alien here.  – My use of the word Child here does not mean immature or incomplete in any way.  We could say that the offspringing Ray is Child to the Sun. – This Childhood is eternal, with an innocence that will endure forever. Where this Child shall go is holy ground. It is His holiness that lights up Heaven and that brings to earth the pure reflection of the light above, wherein are earth and Heaven joined as one.  This is so crucial, that You need understand Your Holiness.  Religions long have taught – some more than others – that All are but miserable sinners, inherently profane.  All You are are miserable Dreamers!  Awaken to Your Holiness.

⁵ It is this Child in you your Father knows as His own Son. It is this Child Who knows His Father. He desires to go home so deeply, so unceasingly, His voice cries unto you to let Him rest a while. It is a tremendous strain to pretend to be what You’re not.  For this reason sleeping was invented.

He does not ask for more than just a few instants of respite-just an interval in which He can return to breathe again the holy air that fills His Father’s house.  As We sit here together, You have allowed Your True Self free.  How good it does feel!

You are His home as well. He will return. But give Him just a little time to be Himself within the peace that is His home, resting in silence and in peace and love.  A little respite from the mop closet.₂  He so deserves it.  Only God is as worthy of Your Love?

⁶ This Child needs your protection. He is far from home. He is so little that He seems so easily shut out, His tiny Voice so readily obscured, His calls for help almost unheard amid the grating sounds and harsh and rasping noises of the world. Yet does He know that in you still abides His sure protection. You will fail Him not. He will go home, and you along with Him.  Now that You see the parallels with the child in Omelas, does the full selfishness of the ego become apparent.₂

⁷ This Child is your defenselessness, your strength.  The defenselessness in which Your safety lies forever, despite its seemingly precarious position in Your mind.

He trusts in you. He came because He knew you would not fail. He whispers of His home unceasingly to you. For He would bring you back with Him, that He Himself might stay and not return again where He does not belong and where He lives an outcast in a world of alien thoughts. His patience has no limits. He will wait until you hear His gentle Voice within you, calling you to let Him go in peace along with you to where He is at home and you with Him.  Feel His Love for You.  Allow Yourself to let It in Your heart.

⁸ When you are still an instant, when the world recedes from you, when valueless ideas cease to have value in your restless mind, then will you hear His Voice. So poignantly He calls to you that you will not resist Him longer. In that instant, He will take you to His home, and you will stay with Him in perfect stillness, silent and at peace, beyond all words, untouched by fear and doubt, sublimely certain that you are at home.  Can such a small silent Voice really be Your Guide?  Remember Elijah and the still small Voice of God.  Standing behind Silence is the Power of the Universe, on beyond mighty.

⁹ Rest with Him frequently today. – He’s the very best of all companions. – For He was willing to become a little child that you might learn of Him how strong is he who comes without defenses, offering only love’s messages to those who think he is their enemy. He holds the might of Heaven in His hand and calls them friend, and gives His strength to them that they may see He would be Friend to them. He asks but they protect Him, for His home is far away, and He will not return to it alone.  You understand that true defenselessness is but All Power.

¹⁰ Christ is reborn as but a little Child each time a wanderer would leave his home. For he must learn that what he would protect is but this Child, Who comes defenseless and Who is protected by defenselessness. Go home with Him from time to time today. You are as much an alien here as He.  You know that, don’t You?  Every single One of You who dreams does know Your alienation, for it is but another word for separation.  Your seeming separation from God is just agonizing.  It is the centre and circumference of all suffering, the root of all pain.

¹¹ Take time today to lay aside your shield which profits nothing and lay down the spear and sword you raised against an enemy without existence. Christ has called you friend and brother. He has even come to you to ask your help in letting Him go home completed and completely. He has come as does a little child who must beseech his father for protection and for love. He rules the universe, and yet He asks unceasingly that you return with Him and take illusions as your gods no more.  The delusion that seems so real isn’t.

¹² You have not lost your innocence. It is for this you yearn. This is your heart’s desire. This is the Voice you hear, and this the Call which cannot be denied. The holy Child remains with you. – It’s Your True Nature. – His home is yours. – Why not accept His Love invitation? – Today He gives you His defenselessness, and you accept it in exchange for all the toys of battle you have made. And now the way is open, and the journey has an end in sight at last. Be still a moment and go home with Him, and be at peace a while.  And what would it mean if the moment – Your Holy Instant – became a Holy Hour, Holy Day, or Holy Forever? My goal then is Be-ing accomplished!

In a basement under one of the beautiful public buildings of Omelas, or perhaps in the cellar of one of its spacious private homes, there is a room. It has one locked door, and no window. A little light seeps in dustily between cracks in the boards, secondhand from a cobwebbed window somewhere across the cellar. In one corner of the little room a couple of mops, with stiff, clotted, foul-smelling heads, stand near a rusty bucket. The floor is dirt, a little damp to the touch, as cellar dirt usually is.

The room is about three paces long and two wide: a mere broom closet or disused tool room. In the room, a child is sitting. It could be a boy or a girl. It looks about six, but actually is nearly ten. It is feeble-minded. Perhaps it was born defective, or perhaps it has become imbecile through fear, malnutrition, and neglect.

They all know it is there, all the people of Omelas. Some of them have come to see it, others are content merely to know it is there. They all know that it has to be there. Some of them understand why, and some do not, but they all understand that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their children, the wisdom of their scholars, the skill of their makers, even the abundance of their harvest and the kindly weathers of their skies, depend wholly on this child’s abominable misery.

INTRODUCTION to Lessons 181 – 200

^I181:1 Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong, your scattered goals blend into one intent. – All commitment does start with this one thing: just the little willingness to do it, whatever it takes.  So even if You do slip and fall, You get right up again. – You are not asked for total dedication all the time, as yet. But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. It is experiencing this which makes it sure that you will give your total willingness to following the way the course sets forth.  How did He segue from the little willingness to total?!  (He is laughing hard!)  Only the ego would ask that question!  By now, don’t You think that You should know Me!  Give Me an inch of good, and I’ll give You back a mile of it.  Give Me a drop of Love, and I’ll return to You an ocean.

With what are We dealing but the Divine Qualities of God.  Life, Truth and Love.  Spirit, Soul and Mind.  Holy Divine Principle, Its Joy and Peace.  How precious are the attributes of God.  They are Your treasure.  And where Your treasure is, there is Your Love.

² Our lessons now are geared specifically to widening horizons – by loosening the ego’s stranglehold that it has on You – and direct approaches to the special blocks which keep your vision narrow and too limited to let you see the value of our goal.  What has it been that has severely narrowed Your horizons?

Well, what else but sir and lady ego?

We are attempting now to lift these blocks, however briefly. Words alone can not convey the sense of liberation which their lifting brings. – Yes, that day that Helen had, recounted in “Absence From Felicity”₁ is a perfect example.  Every day – and every moment can and will be like that! – But the experience of freedom and of peace that comes as you give up your tight control of what you see speaks for itself. Your motivation will be so intensified that words become of little consequence. You will be sure of what you want and what is valueless.  The ego will attempt to deter Your progress, tell You that You can’t sustain such an experience.  And yet the ego is always lying.  Do not believe it.  Tell it to shut up, and really mean it!

³ And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes our progress still. Experience of what exists beyond defensiveness remains beyond achievement while it is denied. It may be there, but you cannot accept its presence.  For You are quite defended against It.  And what does live in the Silence but experience of perfect Love and safety. So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. No more than this is asked because no more than this is needed. It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.  One Holy Moment is but a promise of All which await Your invitation!
